The Ultimate College Packing List: Why You Need 2 Pairs of Shower Slides

Everyone tells you that an ultimate college packing list should start with extra-long twin sheets, a massive mattress topper, and a surge protector before heading off to campus. But nobody warns you about the absolute biohazard that is the communal dorm bathroom. You’ve got maybe fifty people sharing a few stalls, turning the whole place into a humid, warm petri dish. It’s basically paradise for athlete’s foot and whatever weird viruses cause plantar warts.

Most people just throw a single pair of cheap plastic flip-flops into their cart and think they’re good to go. I’m telling you right now, relying on just one pair is a recipe for disaster.

Here is what actually happens if you only bring one pair. You wear them into the shower; they get completely soaked, and you trudge back down the hallway. Because water is pooling inside the shoe, your feet are sliding around like crazy, forcing your toes to awkwardly clench the strap just to keep them on. That friction gives you blisters. Worse, the wet bottoms of your shoes act like a magnet for all the hair, dust, and mystery grime on the hallway floor. The second you walk into your room and kick them off; you’re tracking all those nasty bacteria directly onto your carpet—the exact place you’ll be walking barefoot later.

The fix is stupidly simple: you need a two-pair system.

Pair number one is your designated Wet Slide. This pair never leaves the bathroom ecosystem. You want something made of closed-cell foam—like Crocs or cheap EVA shower shoes with drainage holes—that won’t absorb water like a sponge. They live for the splash zone, offer good grip on slippery tile, and stay by the door to dry out.

When you finish showering, you just step out onto a towel, dry your feet off completely, and slide into your dry pair. Your wet ones go straight onto a cheap dish drying mat by your window to air out. Toss them a quick spray of Lysol once a week, and you’re golden. It sounds like overkill, but trust me, your feet will thank you two months into the semester.
